Nagaharu Yodogawa, Japan’s most iconic critic and a close friend of Akira Kurosawa, famously disliked Steven Spielberg, finding his emotional cues too "calculated" and "simplistic."
This stood in sharp contrast to academic "authorities" like Shigehiko Hasumi (former president of UTokyo). While Hasumi championed Godard and dismissed "Cinema Paradiso" as mere sentimentality, Yodogawa dismissed Godard as "immature" and loved the heart of the film.
Based on a lifetime of experience, both Yodogawa and Kurosawa recognized Takeshi Kitano's talent long before anyone else.
