Ultimately, it’s all because the Tōhō Film Studios are located in the Kinuta and Seijō areas of Setagaya.

That’s why Tōhō directors like Akira Kurosawa and Senkichi Taniguchi, as well as Taniguchi’s wife Kaoru Yachigusa, all lived in Setagaya.
Movie stars like Toshirō Mifune and Shintarō Katsu also lived there simply because it was convenient for commuting to the studios—often even on foot.

Tatsuya Nakadai also established his acting academy, "Mumeijuku," in Setagaya.

Both Ken Takakura and Tatsuya Nakadai passed away at the same hospital, Tamagawa Hospital, for the same reason: it was close to their homes.

In that sense, Setagaya is the heart of Japanese cinema and theater.

While it may not have grand theaters like the city center, it is the place where the legendary directors and actors actually lived.
