As a movie fan, you might find this hard to hear, but your image of Japan is stuck in the cinema of the past.
Nagisa Oshima and Takeshi Kitano are legends, but in a way, their influence is "harmful" because they’ve trapped foreigners in a version of Japan that no longer exists.
Oshima’s world of discrimination and Kitano’s world of Yakuza are now just "fictions" or "history." Modern Japan has shifted to a cold, pragmatic "comprehensive spec-based assessment."
People here don't care about your lineage or ethnic roots anymore. They only judge you by three core specs: Academic pedigree, Physical appearance, and Wealth.
Look at the reality: Former PM Taro Aso is the grandson of the legendary Shigeru Yoshida, who rebuilt post-war Japan. Yet, despite that "noble" bloodline, he is constantly mocked and treated as a joke by the public because his individual performance doesn't measure up.
Similarly, the film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, whom I often interact with, is half-Japanese and half-Korean. In the old movies, this might have been a "theme," but in today's Japan, it’s irrelevant. He is judged solely on his intellect and the quality of his work.
Don't confuse "Great Cinema" with "Modern Reality."
