I am the granddaughter of a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist priest.
In Japan, our view of "reincarnation" is quite different from India.
In Japanese Buddhism, we don't really think about "bearing the karma of one's past life."
Instead, Japanese people often view their next life with optimism.
We might lightly say, "I want to be a soccer player next time," or even "I want to be a cat!"
Also, in the Confucian culture of East Asia, "filial piety" (honoring one's parents) is very important.
However, parents in our culture are much more independent.
It is actually quite rare for parents to be overly dependent on their children.
For a parent, relying too much on their child is seen as a loss of dignity—it is considered a matter of great personal shame.
