The controversial cat sequence in "Sátántangó" (1994) led to some difficulties in getting the film screened in the United Kingdom, due to legislation protecting nonhuman animals from cruelty and the British Board of Film Classification refusing to certify such films.

Tarr insisted the scene was filmed humanely under a veterinarian's supervision. In 2001, Béla Tarr stated that the Cat was healthy and living with him and Ágnes Hranitzky in a house outside Budapest.
